WSQ 13 – James Gosling

Just finished Triangulation Episode 245 featuring James Gosling, the creator/inventor of probably the most used programming language in the world, Java.

Leo and him talked about some really interesting stuff here, but what really caught my eye was how it started as something simple and came to become the tool or language that revolutionized the entire world.

Don’t forget that Java is actually in millions and millions of devices, our PC, smartphones, Cars, Multimedia players, GPS Navigators, and may many more. We owe Gosling and his team a freaking LOT, the Internet itself developed a lot around Java and the world’s companies, communication and the whole Information Era happened because of this.

Another subject that seems interesing the whole controversy with companies such as Google, are not willing to pay for a licence for using Java or it’s API, and how Oracle sued them and later became unsuccesfull with the demand which resulted in Google not being charged, but hey! it didn’t end there, there is supposedly another trial in which Oracle calls for  9.3 BILLION DOLLARS!

At last, that last subject about the Wave Glider from Liquid Robotics (a company Gosling works in) seemed really cool, and it was funny when James said that he recieved a call from a ship crew telling him they spent a whole hour trying to catch the Wave Glider, funny and ironic how an effective software working can cause such frustration.

I’ll leave you with this picture of a cup from Sun Microsystems (another company James worked in).

In this video of the Triangulation Podcast the men invited is James Gosling one of the inventors of Java. His passion in the computers came in a very yong age, when his father show him an old computer and James got fascinating with the device. He started to get information about that, and then in school he discover programing he started to work in satelital programing and he used to skip school a lot of times, but their teachers where happy that in such a yong age we could be gaining money in something very new in those days.

He worked in IBM, their first projects was software, the idea of JAVA came from a small group that saw how everything was changing hardware to software, they saw that they run with problems that people that were not preper to program did.

This podcast was more difficult to understand than the past one. It was mor tectician, but the core, the story of Java was very interesting, the highs, the lows, the conflicts with google, oracle and everythins,

You can see how everything happend and what is know teaching kids to learn java, in this case Minecraft.

Next: Triangulation 245: James Gosling interview. James Gosling, creator of Java language (He implemented the language and the virtual machine). My thoughts that I got of the video:

  • Java is born based on the idea that the companies were missing the transition from the usage of components in computers to use them in everything. They thought out of the box and designed a language that would be used in everything.

BTW, the video is missing 50 minutes of content. Don’t know why…

Well…. Now there are no more videos.

No, not that Gosling

Now onto Triangulation’s 245th episode, an interview with the creator of Java, undercover-engineer, James Gosling. What’s the deal with airplane food? And this interview, of course:

  • There’s more solutions to one problem. As Gosling said Java came out of laziness, in place of a Pascal compiler. Thinking out of the box shenanigans, but good shenanigans.
  • Being a spy is cool. Gosling “broke into” his university’s facilities to learn to program, programming’s that cool; spies go a long way to program.
