Flipped learning is an innovative way of education which has proven to be better than traditional. The traditional methods are where the teacher comes to class and lectures the students. As in everything, I consider some teachers are pretty awesome and some others not really. I think every person must find a passion in his/her life and follow it, and teaching is not an exception. I think teachers must be really passionate about it because they are the people that inspire the youth, no matter what people think, at the end of the day specially and university level we get inspired or disappointed by the teachers we have. And if we love a topic but the person who is teaching us doesn´t make it exciting it’s very likely we’ll lose our interest in that topic. Another possibility is that we might think we hate a topic or we just don’t really care about it but we get lucky enough to be taught by a person who makes you be interested in the area.

Flipping

All I’m saying is that I really think that for us who have the chance to study, teachers are a fundamental part in our lives. An every teacher has its own way to teach, but in the last time the most innovative schools around the globe have tried to find a way to improve the teaching model so teaching becomes easier and better. The “traditional way” has been working for a lot of years and as we can see, it’s not 100% efficient. It consist on a person lecturing a room of students, give them work to do at home and raising hands to ask a question to the teacher.

But then two chemistry professors named Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams came with a total new, innovative educational model. At the beginning they create a way in which they could help students who were performing badly at school. They made them watch videos of classes at home and when they went to the classroom they worked on what they’ve seen so they work by their own and asked the teacher just the things they did not understand. This allows the teacher to help each student according to the capacity of each one. This doesn’t mean the teacher does nothing, the teacher now has to be able to answer any kind of question the students does about the topic, instead of limiting him/herself to just lecture.

They saw that all the student were affected positively by this so they started to work this with all of the students and as the previewed the notes raised considerably. Now those teachers share their model with the whole world and lot of institutions are adopting this because it’s likely that I’ll impact the future of education.

El Tec de Monterrey has always been known as an innovative institution. Now it is adopting this way to make the professors guides to the students instead of just lecturing, and not just that, the school is attracting people who wants to teach and who wants to improve the way students work, so it´s cool to know we have top teachers. But a change of this size will be hard to perform. So far the teachers are just changing a few thinks but aren´t still making the whole jump. As a matter of fact Programming Fundaments is the first and only class were I get this kind of learning, and perhaps Verbal Expression, where I have some only classes. At first it was weird because the teachers told us how the course will work and I thought we wouldn´t do it but know I see how this kind of learning has help me. At home I read the book he told us to: “How to think like a computer scientist. Think Python” and in class I get to work and ask all my questions to the teacher. This is very efficient because the teacher can help each person according on what each one is working on, so nobody gets lost and nobody gets bored. I really think this is the future of education and the fact that we have teachers that make the effort to switch into this model (because I think it must be hard) motivates me to give my best.
