Day 5 -Already over?! :(

--Originally published at My daily adventure in the "Internet fingerprint" course

That is it.

The last day just started and I feel like we just “began”. After finally getting into the topic it seems to be over. Which of course does not mean that my “digital identity”-journey will end here. But… But, that will mean, no more overloaded Ken jumping around…

We started the day a little bit later than usual and watched a video of Derek Muller. If you do not now his name and never heard of “Veritasium” you should really check out his Youtube-channel. This guy rocks and you will learn something new in every video of him – not as back in the days, when you were young. School teachers probably made it every 2-3 weeks that you learned something new IN school and that you did not have to repeat it a thousand times at home until you knew all about it.

After that, Diego Zavala took over the lecture. Diego works in the video production specialised in the documentary video production.

How do we tell a “story” in a video? Empowering?

There are different ways, obviously, and it is hard to say which way is the best way. After watching many videos and getting a lot of advises, we were assigned a task in which we had do make a 1-minute video about the stuff that we like to do (Photo/video-safari).

I did not make it in time and therefore I am not able to upload it yet!

Did someone say guest speaker?

Rebecca Hogue and Helen DeWaard joined in today and talked about digital identity shaping and again we heard some more stuff about blogging.

Here are some links if you like to further investigate:

Rebecca: (Student) Blogging and the Fact of Other People

Helen:  My RenovationsMapping Digital Literacy and Practice (pdf)

It was really fun to listen to those two women and we had some awesome questions for them!

This week comes to en end, but hopefully not everyone is going to stop blogging. I think it is a really cool way to spread the word and establish some sort of reputation in the internet. Not sure whether I will continue this blog here, but I might start another blog in the future! Anyways, thanks to Ken, the lecture that seems to never loose his energy and motivation and of course thanks to all the guest speakers that we had during “Semana I”

Hope to see you guys around, cheers!

Day 4 – Time is flying

Another update on my well-being?

Yes… I am still sick. BUT(!), it is getting better. The day started not as bad as the last 3 days and I feel like it is getting better. Still got a running nose but that is more or less it. Making progress! WUHU! I know what you are thinking right now…

But no, that is it for my complaints today! No more talking about my flu. schhh!

So what is on our schedule for today?

Starting of with checking out some of the workers of the boys and girls sitting around me during this week. I have seen quite a few really good ones and I am currently following one blog. Yeah, it is the blog of a friend of mine, but.. you know? I am just picky and can not decide whom to follow. Anyways, left a comment here and there – let us move on!

Learn new stuff – every day!

So, apparently Lee Skallerup has an amazing collection of very useful recourses and tools on her blog => Click me!

There is quite a lot stuff that you can learn, “copy” and simply start using on your blog. How do networks work? What is trolling and how to avoid trolling? But do we actually want to avoid trolling? (Thought of the day) Orrrrr Algorithms? I know… You don not want to encounter the last topic – but let me tell you, that is the real sh*t.

Photo-Safari? Whaaaat?

Another day, another photo-safari! This time – What do we like the most? What do we like to do in our free time? Not sure whether I am going to cook today, but if I am going to you will get a picture of that in here! I might add it later during the week though…

Guest Speaker Time!

And nooooow, talking to us from a country which is located more than 12,486 kilometres away from Mexico (Thanks technology!!!)…. Maaahaaaa Baaaaaliiiiii! (Did you read that with the voice of that guy calling out the two opponents at a boxing match?)

Maha Bali!!! Go check her out. No, honestly, click on that link. Now.

Got curious while checking out her twitter? Wait, you telling me that you still have not been to her twitter? Go there. Maha Bali!

Guess you are curious about her now… So here are some more readings:

Critical Digital Citizenship: Promoting Empathy and Social Justice Online

+

Knowing the Difference Between Digital Skills and Digital Literacies, and Teaching Both

Thirsty for more? I know… But that is it for today! So come back tomorrow and get the last post about semana I 2016!

Cheers everybody?

Day 3 -Bring it on!

Late Start!:/

The flu is killing me. Another day, another night with just a few hours of sleep. Today, I did not even make it on time… After some talking and a Youtube-Video we more or less directly jumped to our first guest speaker for today. Autumm Caines, Bonnie Stewart and Sundi Richard joined us via a live stream.

If you like to check out any of them on twitter don’t hesitate and simply click their names down here:

Bonnie Stewart started the talk with showing us some slides on Powerpoint. The very first slide was a picture of her living room. By showing us the room, she wants to give us the feeling that there is something more than just that “face” on the screen – making all of this more comfortable.

‘You never remember what you did 20 years ago, but you will remember WHO was with you and you made your times and experiences “good times” and “good experiences” or the opposite.’ – That is was Bonnie is more or less letting me know right now.

Sundi and Autumm were using a diagram with 4 axes to categorise different platforms. The different axes were “Personal” vs “Professional” and “Visitor” vs “Resident”. I will provide some examples down here.

Todays Activity!

Ken asked us to do an audio interview with a person we do not know yet. The official lecture for today is over and therefore I am going to try and find someone on the campus I who would like to do that audio interview with.

Lecture is over!

I found a guy on campus from France and he was kind enough to do the interview with me. Sadly, he did not want me to upload the audio but he allowed me to write down what we have talked about.

The Interview with Mr. France!

We were basically just holding a smalltalk in which I was asking a lot of questions concerning his heritage, choice of studies and his hobbies. He told me, that he is from Lyon and that he is 21 years old. He is studying business administrations and will stay here in Guadalajara until December. When we came to the hobbies and food topic he started to grin a little. Especially while talking about food he seemed to be filled with different feelings. On the one hand, he said that he liked the food over here, but on the other hand he is really missing the food back home. Hobbies included pretty much everything that you can do outdoors. From hiking, over riding his mountain bike through some hills to simply going jogging or taking a walk.

That is it for today! If you are keen to know what is going to expect us tomorrow, come back tomorrow! *gg*

Day 2 – Who is still with us?

--Originally published at My daily adventure in the "Internet fingerprint" course

What’s up next?

My day started off just as nice (careful, irony in use) as yesterday. Another night with almost no sleep and therefore I am not really in the mood for anything right now. The flu/cold mixture is still hanging around and that makes me a big, useless meat-cluster.

The program for today is a little “Photo Safari” and some more guest speakers. Laura Gogia, Lee Skallerup Bessette,  Alan Levine and Amy Burvall are going to talk to us and right now I think it is going to be something connected with the “digital identity” everyone around me is talking about… What do you think?

If you are keen to read more about the guest speakers just check out the following links!

So, the Photo-Safari kind of reminded me of my time in the kindergarten (sorry Ken!). We were supposed to cut out words from magazines and then take pictures with those words (e.g. “Tree”) in front of the actual thing (a tree..). We had some time outside and the fresh air was actually giving me back some energy (yey, back at 5%!) and therefore I was not too disappointed by the whole activity.

After our break we were honoured by the presence of Lee and Laura and afterwards of Alan and Amy. These guys really know their stuff well and talked us through a lot of knowledge and their own experiences. From time to time it was hard to keep up with them but it was definitely worth listening!

I feel like going through a low right now. My head is giving me a good time again (headache) and my nose does not stop to run. Guess there is not much more coming out of my head as of today and that is why I am going to stop this blog for today.

Hope to see you guys joining Us, me and all the great, upcoming speakers tomorrow!

Day 1 – Here we go!

--Originally published at My daily adventure in the "Internet fingerprint" course

What is this?

IMG_1665.JPG

“Digital Identity – Internet Fingerprint”

So, to be honest, I am here in this course, because we needed to fill 5 days and I didn’t want to spend any money on ‘Semana I’. And having those conditions given, it was the only option for me. But I am happy to learn new stuff and especially when it comes to the world wide web, you can always learn something new.

Until now, I encountered Ken Bauer, the lecturer who is going to lead us through this week. He seems so be a fun guy and he is really full of energy. He makes me listen even though that I am really tired as a result of a very short night (I got the flu, cold… Makes it hard to sleep longer than an hour). Ken appears to be a cautious Internet enthusiast. He kind of reminds me of a professor of my home university who is also into social media and the whole Internet-thing.

Before I am going to talk about the first day, I am quickly going to state my expectations towards the course. Before reading anything else but the description on the ‘Semana I’ webpage, I thought that we are going to get taught how to use and handle our private information in the internet. Starting with what are cookies and what is Facebook doing with our data? And going a step further, how to prevent others from abusing my information.

So far, it turns out to be kind of this course that I was thinking of at the beginning. We already had our first guest lecture talking, Dave Cormier, a professor  from Charlottetown, PE, Canada. He was telling us about the traces that we leave behind while browsing the internet and during that time, students were able to ask him random questions.

If you want to check it out – here is the link: Dave Cormiers’ speech about the ‘Internet Fingerprint’

After the break, we continued with creating the blog that I am currently writing in.

Random thoughts!

What is everyone doing during the course? Ken keeps talking, giving advises or explaining how to do stuff – btw. he likes to use the word “stuff” – and he keeps running around (As mentioned before, he is full of energy). One student managed to fall asleep during the course, from what I was able to see, and that was rather impressing considering how much energy is in this room (Yes, Ken seems to never stop).

At this point, after mentioning several times how much energy is coming from that one individual, I can not stop thinking about another Ken, who was always full of energy….

Can you spot a difference?

Other students are hanging around in Facebook, working on their blogs or playing games.

Ken needs a break, or at least he is “taking” a break, by showing us a Ted Talk of Alec Couros:”Identity in a digital world”. He is talking just as fast as Ken (Another guy, with a lot of energy). Alec is making it really clear how early the digital footprint starts and that most of our children will probably have a digital footprint before they are even going to use devices such as a mobile phone. Furthermore he is pointing out how dangerous the footprint is and that a lot of children are getting bullied in the internet everyday.

Today in a nutshell!

For not picking that course on “purpose”, I am positively surprised. Even though that I am afraid that Ken is too enthusiastic (huge workload + lots of activities), I think it will be a lot of fun! Looking forward to the next day!
