Video production and more

--Originally published at IWeek: Digital Identity

Today was the last day of the IWeek, man time runs fast. We had time to prepare videos, the video sfari of yesterday, for the activity with Diego Zavala. He talked about a story-tell and video productions, where video production was implemented in the universities for the students to develope knowledge with the camera, but it was too linear, difficult to transfer your idea to the technical part and also the students didn’t have the money and/or time to buy and/or learn the technicalities of a camera; that’s why they change to the story-tell. In addition, the length of the videos used to be of 20-25 minimal, now is between 3-7 min maximum.

Story-telling usually is a montage of images or small videos to tell something where you don’t need a good camera, simply with the camera of your cellphone.

More Photo Safari and Comments

This was a really relaxed day. The 2 activities of today were commenting in other blogs of the people of the course and another photo safari about the things that we like to do.

For the commenting, it was kind of difficult because sometimes wasn’t a lot of information, has information that already know, or just simply I was really interested in the topic they were talking about so I didn’t have anything valuable or a good comment to publish.Other times, if didn’t know what to write but the blog was interesting, I would only give it a “like”.

After the Photo Safari, we had one guest speaker: Maha Bali.

Digital Presence and Photo Safari?!

This was a really busy day. We had 4 guest speakers: Laura Gogia, Lee Skallerup, Alan Levine and Amu Burvall; and a “photo safari”, I really didn’t know what was that or what I had to do.

So, after the explanation, I had to cut 5 to 10 words from newspapers or magazines, that were kind of related with the ones I wrote yesterday, and take pictures with those words with something related to them.

Here are the pictures:

The words I chose were: Confidence, triumph, experience, dreams and fun. The pictures are things that I like or I think are something I that help you get or develope the word (I get more confidence when I dance).

After all of this, we had the conference with Laura and Lee.  One thing I liked that Lee and Laura mentioned was that you don’t have to separate your physical identity from your digital identity and how to establish you digital presence, in fact it is actually difficult to do that, so it’s better to mix both, but in a safe way. You can use multiple platforms to publish depending of what you want to accomplish with your posts or what topics you want to talk about.

They talked about following or being part of a community saying that you can meet people in those communities and, if you are following someone, you don’t have to participate or agree with that person always, but you have to find how you can help him/her and participate in the things that both like. Also, if you have a digital presence, just like there are risks, there are good things and opportunities like meet people, get money, get a job, etc; but you need the courage to write and post it and be strong when people think bad things or write mean comments about you or about what you wrote.

The next talk was with Amy Burvall and Alan Levine. According to Alan, writing a blog is a good thing because it is like and extensive memory, you write things of the past and then you can go back and remember them in an easy way. Amy mentioned that, some students that public their achievements (portfolio) on a blog, they got the opportunity to enter to the university.

Both mentioned that, you don’t have to have a strict schedule and you can post whenever you want, but you can do a series so the post can be consistent and so sporadic. Also, for both, they don’t care if their content is used in other things or for making money, they don’t care about the final product as much.as the creative process. In addition, they said that, if you write a post, but then you don’t know the implications of publishing it or you are ashamed of publishing it, then you can delete it or put it private, it’s okay.

Twitter and Linkedin are 2 good platforms where you can publish things for a job or just look for the sites where the your field is recognized. They also talked about “cat-fishing” where other people creates personas using you information, photos, etc. to fool people and scam them.

A new digital adventure.

Today was the beginning of the IWeek, I could say it’s my first one because one was “Taller Vertical” and the other one was a trip to Seattle and San Francisco, but that’s a story for another time.

For the first day, it was actually pretty good. I had an idea of what I had to do during the week, like write a blog and learn about how you can develope you identity on the Internet in a good way, protecting the information that is important to you, but also to be open with the world.

It was really fun the talk with Dave Cormier, I really enjoyed it. The only thing that maybe was bad was that we always asked about bad things and the bad consequences of a bad digital identity and never talked about the good thing or the advantages, but maybe tomorrow the other expositors talk about it (I am one of the people that asked a question).

And the videos were really cool too. A lot about control what you should upload to the internet, because it can be a record of all the things (good, bad, embarrasing, intelligent, disrespectful, etc.).
