So why is this important?

banner1.jpgI remember when I was choosing my Semana I course I had in mind the digital identity course with Ken Bauer mainly for two reasons: I know how Ken works with his courses, and I really identify with the subject which is something that I will touch upon in later posts. So, when I told my father about the subject he went ahead and asked me “Why is that important?”. This is when I noticed that this idea and concept isn’t really touched that much between people, which in my opinion is not a good thing, because maintaining a good digital identity is an important value for any internet citizen.

Now, why is this important? Well for various reasons honestly. Security is a big one for some people, to me not really, but it’s worth touching a little. Maintaining an updated and well structured digital life can make it for others to gain you’re personal information, from full name to address and in some extreme cases billing information. Being present and responsable in the web can lead to a good security.

The most important in my opinion is to maintain an good, and accurate image of yourself in the internet. Now there’s usually two extremes to this idea. Either someone is really shy, and posts near to nothing in the internet, and maybe even gets to the point that this person doesn’t even use his real name; or a very extrovert person posts everything that he/she can, pictures of their cat, of them working out, partying, everything. Extremes are always bad. It’s important to be in the middle ground between these two. Why? Mainly because when you don’t post anything only things that you can’t control will show up when someone looks you up in the web. If you post a lot with out caring what you’re posting chances are that you’ll end up posting stuff that you and your family will be embarrassed by. So the idea is to post things that you might be proud of, things that you like and properly show who you are. Think before posting.

Now, another subject that I think is really important is identity theft, multiple identities, and manipulation through cat fishing. This all falls into this subject and they are really important concepts. But then again, I will touch this subjects in later posts. So make sure to check the others out.
