I hate home office and online classes, I am not a person that likes to stay all day in one place. Having classes or work without really having contact with your classmates or teammates its hard sometimes, especially when you are facing problems or difficulties, it’s easier to blame someone else when you working online.

I must admit I skip classes a lot, I prioritize work more than going to classes, I think there are subjects you can’t learn inside a classroom. Because of this I often ask the teachers for help in specific themes. We only have communication with teachers via zoom or a class groups, so I can’t ask for this questions directly.

I have reflected all this time and I must say I am starting to appreciate things a little more. They way we live can change suddenly we don’t know what will happen in the future. So it’s a good time to redefine goals and review what we really want and how we will achieve this.

We can use the power of computers to create mathematical models in order to have a real way to quantify desired metrics, for example how many time we will finish a project if we add more staff, or how many productive hours we really have in our teams.

We can also take advantage of specialized software, to help us create a more efficient model. You can tune your models against actual results.

Follow your gut

Management involve things that you can’t learn, you need to have heart,  soul,  gut and nose. Lead with your heart, earn the trust of your team, if your team trust you they will follow you.  Your organization mus have soul everyone must work for a common goal. Use you gut to select your team, and you need a nose to detect bullshit.

People need an anonymous way to send message to the project manager, no one want to tell bad news. We need a way to communicate with everyone in an anonymous way.

Always late

Time management is a really important part in software development we need to create a realistic schedule that we can follow, if we don’t, we will always be late for something, and no matter how hard we work or how bad the consequences are we will never finish on time.  Punishment don’t help developers to work faster. They need to feel safe to adapt to new changes.

We think we can work in our homes just because we deal with software. But the truth is we need to be together in order to get anything done. That way we can communicate directly and report problems as soon as possible.

Deadline, Chapters 3,4,5 (Not done)

If something is for sure in this book, no matter how hard you try, you just can’t predict what’s coming next. I mean, I suppose if you kidnap someone you don’t go ahead and take his entire house furniture so he wakes up in his own bed. But again in this book kidnapping is the new hiring so not much has to make sense.

Something I have always found worrying is the fact that must people look for a job with money as the most important aspect, and I know it sounds silly because the world works with money, but I feel many people forget what for me is crucial in a job, it HAS to be something I enjoy. I have met people that used to get paid in some cases twice as much as in their next job, but once they found a job they truly enjoyed, the main lesson they had is that their life is happier and with the passion they now have they will achieve more in the long run.

Getting back into the book, it’s very important to notice all the questions Tom asks Lahksa about the job position, first things first, communication is key, he wants all his employees in the same place and all of them able to communicate in English with him as with all the right tools and up to date systems, he also wants to bring people he knows will do a great job working for him, and to be able to do that in a job must be awesome as you don’t have to deal with finding the perfect co-workers again.

Is in the gut, in the heart, and in the soul.

Is amazing when you found somebody that is in the same frequency as you, the one that can follow you and also teach you new things on the way.

While I was reading two chapters of a great novel about management I discovered about three specific qualities that any good manager must has, and these involves to lead with the heart, trust your g u t ( t r u s t your hunches), build soul into the organization and develop a nose for bullshit.  It sounds kind of hard but is true, you need it to be great on your job and not only another boring boss.

Sometimes to be a great manager you need help of someone you can trust, the one that allow you to express your doubts and help you to make a good decision, because it does not matter how long you have run as a leader, you can always screw up. For this reason you must trust in your team and make an environment where they can trust in any teammate, so by the time the battle comes, your real work is already done.

Remember, listen more than you speak.
