Why should we study computing security

Now a day’s computer sciences is everywhere. You can find that computer sciences and the new technologies are everywhere. From google that stores all your browsing data, PayPal with your payment data, google maps that knows where you have been or amazon that knows what you’re looking for or Facebook that knows all about your friends and family. This isn’t all, a lot of companies uses this information for marketing, for analysis and quite a lot of things, even this restricted information is managed. So why should anyone care about Computing security?

My top reasons:

  1. No one escape from computer security.

1

Any company, startup or person that uses any kind of technology for computer sciences is vulnerable. Since the moment you have a computer you are vulnerable to an attack. We can see this daily, who has never received email winning thousands of dollars? This type of attack it’s called phishing where the user thinks he wins and the mail ask for personal information. Here is a little guide to avoid this type of attacks https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/safety/online-privacy/phishing-symptoms.aspx

Also, every new company in computer sciences is vulnerable so computer security is just essential for everyone that wants to manage confidential information.

  1. Every Day comunication

2

Every day a lot of information is shared, transmitted and transferred by computer systems. Just in any enterprise there are thousands of mails delivered daily, more than 30 million of what’s app messages (https://expandedramblings.com/index.php/whatsapp-statistics/2/) and Facebook messages delivered daily. How can I ensure my information is safe? well that’s another reason to study computer Security.!

  1. More and More Jobs

3

If you study computer security your almost guarantee to have a job. Just like i comment in “Every day communication”, the responsibility of a computer security engineer is of huge impact and

Systems code of Ethics

--Originally published at TC2027 – Computer and Information Security

So i think that one of the more important concerns about systems and computers applications is if your data is well manage. In my opinion this is a really delicate topic, but one of the things every computer system engineer or any whose professional path is about computer systems must follow a code of ethics.

The last Ken’s system security class we made a Photo Safary activity to illustrate some of the ethics code for systems administrators. Quite fun activity because every image i’ll share with you is the representation of one ethics code! This with the help of my classmate Siomara.

1. Professionalism: This code talks about maintaining your professional role, don’t let emotions or people interfere with your professional role. In this photo we choose our professor Ken because he’s always professional, always in his role. (Hope he doesn’t get mad about this picture )

2. Personal Integrity: This code is about been responsable for mistakes, take actions when needed, assist when possible and always avoid interest conflicts in your role. For this we choose this security ward because even we try to persuade him to take pictures in the gym he deny us access because it’s the rules (which is kind of dumb because every one takes selfies in there…).

3. Privacy: this code talks about protecting confidentiality, the person in charge is going to access private information ONLY if they have the user permission. For this one we decide the IT guys! aways helping when you ask for it.

4. Laws and Policies: This talks about that the person in charge will teach himself about laws and regulations regarding their duty. So CASA from ITESM is the perfect example because they know every detail that you ask about college, payments and administration Stuff.
