My Weight, My Health

--Originally published at arantza's blog

Today I’m going to write about how to watch your weight. I am no health expert, but I want to share what I did that helped me lose about 12 kilograms in a year.

So first of all, let me tell you that your health always comes first, so if you are thinking on losing weight or starting a diet, you have to be careful of not harming your physical and mental well-being.

So, what I did was that I started to be more conscious of what I was eating per day. I realized that I was eating too many bread, cookies, and chips. I also found out that I was bloated almost all the time. Above all, I was getting lazier, so I started skipping my Crossfit classes. It was very shocking when I found out that a pair of shorts I bought a few months before didn’t fit anymore. I was very upset, so I did this:

  • I stopped eating too many carbs, which means: no more bread nor pexels-photo-129574pasta (at least until I reached my ideal weight), and of course, NO JUNK FOOD.
  • Milk was causing me to bloat almost everyday, so I stopped drinking it.
  • I started to eat more vegetables and fruits, and I also drank more water than I used to.
  • I stopped skipping Crossfit!

What I did was very simple and it worked out for me just fine. So if you want to lose weight or watch your weight, just watch your calorie income. No junk food at least for a while. Once you reach your ideal weight, you can have a treat once in a while! There’s no need to suffer. Also, you have to work out at healthy-people-woman-girlthe gym or take some classes from 4 days to 6 per week. Eat fruits and vegetables, exchange your soda for something healthier like tea or naturally-flavored water. You can also have a home-made smoothie. Oh! And it is very important that you never skip a meal, for it can affect your metabolism and slow it down, making it difficult to lose weight.

But always remember, be conscious that your mental and physical health come first, so if you begin to feel bad, reach out to your doctor!

Define where you are

Sometimes you run into those days that they are just no good. As a quick introductory to this blog post I will start by saying that today has been a bit of that to me. First, the flu that I had for a while decided to kick in again. Second, I have no internet at home. Third, and final, the computer in which I usually work in has been updating for the past 2 hours. With that said this blog will most likely go up a little bit later than expected.

Anyways, let’s move into the actual topic of today’s discussion, which is digital interaction, and the effect of this in the physical world. Today in the course a conversation between a classmate, and our teacher Ken Bauer broke out. The classmate had the opinion that you should live in the moment, and that if you spent time in your phone you give of the idea that you’re being a little antisocial. Ken gave a completely opposite point of view in the matter. He explain that someone being in their phone doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t being social. They might be talking to someone else or giving an update of upcoming events. In this matter, I incline more to Ken’s point of view.

Something that technology has given us is a huge way of connectivity. There’s so many tool now to connect with people from all over the world that to a certain degree is unbelievable. Social media helps us to stay connected with people that are really far away. Personally, I still talk to a high school friend of mine that lives in New York, and we talk like we used to even when we lived relatively close to each other. It’s something beautiful, but like everything, there’s some bad sides.

The first bad side is that people abuse this. Yes. People abuse social media. A lot. It good to maintain an online interaction with people, but in certain cases it just gets ridiculous. I’ll give an example. Sometimes, when I’m playing with a friend of mine League of Legends I tell him to tell his brother to hope on, but he doesn’t get up, and goes to talk to his brother, no, he texts him to go online. Isn’t that too much? In my opinion, yeah. We need to learn how to responsibly use the tools that are provided to us.

The second one tackles a little bit of a cultural matter. Some people still have a bad view in modern technology. A great example can be found with my father. Now this is the second time that I mention him, but trust be, he sure is a character. My father loves technology. He’s always up to date, or at least tries to. However he is a little bit stubborn in his ways. Sometimes, he will strike into a conversation with my brother about digital interaction, because he tends to always be checking his phone to reply or talk to friends. My father has the idea that it’s more important to take in what is going on in your surroundings. Of course he knows that keeping up to date in an online environment is also important, but he does go more to the physical concept.

Now personally, I think it’s important to find a balance between real life, and digital life. What do you guys think? I’m really open to ideas about this subject.

The yellow duck comments on classmate s’ blogs and discover new utilities.

This morning we saw our classmate’s blogs and we were commenting and liking all post, through this we can see the work all our friends had been doing.

We had video conference with Maha Bal, She talked about how to make a blog about a particular topic, that was interesting because sometime we are lost and we don’t know what to write about, she was really nice to us and her baby was a refreshing situation in the class.

We did a Safari Video, very similar to the Safari Photo activity, the only difference as the title can suggested this new Safari is about taking videos, taking videos about what we like to do, this activity  was fun as it was the Safari Photo.

Last Day!

How to Choose the Best Free Blog Site & Platform

Context and struggles

--Originally published at Digital Identity

Warning: This post, like its predecessors, contains little to none information, it serves as a compilation of my opinions and understanding of topics discussed during the course.

Is context really necessary? How important is it?

Earlier this week we had started a conversation about the importance of context, today Ken showed us an image regarding misinterpretation, the image had a group of people looking at their cellphones implying that instead of hanging out with people next to them they rather ignore them, the next part shows the conversations they’re having through their cellphones; we also watched a video of a group of girls taking selfies during a baseball game, the narrators were making fun of them, since the video became viral the girls were invited to the Ellen Show and got the chance to explain their side of the story, admitting they were all part of a sorority that uses the baseball game to get to know each other and they actively help an association, and used the fame that came with that video to help even more. While I had watched the first (and viral) video before, I was angry (again) at the narrators because at the beginning the explicitly ask for people to send their photos and when this group of girls do they became the target of their jokes.

I personally think that our generation is criticized for said behaviors far more often than older generations and the criticism comes from them particularly. Reading about this some time ago, I agreed with the writer that stated that the generations that came before cellphones, internet and such useful resources, probably faced a similar battle with their predecessors in regards of phones, tv, electric light, and others, and they are repeating the same mistake: assuming the new generation is being handed everything without a struggle.

Now, it is true technology keeps making life easier than before, but as stated by Uncle Ben: with great power comes great responsibility. So most likely our parents didn’t have google to help them with their homework or investigations and we do, but we are confronted with the idea that since there is a lot of information easily accesible, we need to make an excellent use of it, so we need to dive into the immensity of the internet, read a bunch of information, discern valid from made up, find the most recent studies regarding the topic, recollect it from various sites and sources, to finally put it all together in a flawless summary of no more than a certain amount of pages. Again a nice group of skills to learn and put to good use, but when are these kids or young adults going to go out and socialize after the amount of time invested, so now we are all day staring at our screens doing nothing instead of living real life.

Finally and privately discussing more on Maha‘s views on censorship, I share her opinion that censoring a certain term that is obviously intended to insult another person in regards of their race, preference, or religion to cite a few, but not others is certainly a form of discrimination. With this I don’t mean that for example black people in the US have achieved their desired point of equality, rather they have been oppressed the longest and are beginning to receive part of the respect they evidently deserve (although the US is still far far away from erradicating racism towards black people). So reflecting on that particular situation and considering the time latinos and other minority groups have been migrating and establishing in the US, at this rate, I would have to wait more than my expected lifespan before seeing changes; and don’t get me started on censorship and gender equality because that rant may never end.

Day 4 – Learning more!!

--Originally published at Semana i – Digital Identity

So today we learn some thing about programs on internet that we can use. Ken suggested some programs like Camtasia so we can record some videos, and also edit them. I used to use Sony Vegas Pro 12 to edit videos but, like how you imagine, I used a pirate version so I think I would not use it anymore.

proudI already install Camtasia, free version, so i can edit the videos we are gonna use tomorrow for the final class?

But yeah, today I learn that there are a lot of programs that you can use, and a lot of them are free or at leats cheap, and that contributes to help the people that create them!!clapSo I hope my videos are okay for tomorrow’s class and hope it would be a great final class!!!

Reflection on Day 4

HERE’S MY REFLECTION OF THE DAY:

When talking about technology, there is the dilemma if it brings us closer or further apart . But in reality, technology brings us closer. Small human comunication brings us closer together.  Social media gives us the opportunity to interact with people from all over the world, make new friends and find people who want to talk about topics we are interesed in. However, it is important that you do not leave your face to face interactions apart just because you want to be on the internet.
