WSQ13 – James Gosling

In this video of Triangulation Podcast they have an special guest, which is James Gosling, one of the inventors of the programming language Java.

This happened when he was working at IBM with a group of software developers that acknowledged that everyday thing where starting to become software-based and not hardware-based, hence the creation of Java.

Said creation brought a lot of problems, like conflicts with Google and Oracle, but as we know now-a-days Java is, probably, the biggest programming language that exists and is used in EVERYTHING, from simple computer or mobile applications, to HUGE videogames like Minecraft.

This was a very interesting podcast that circulates around Ward Cunningham’s creation, the Wiki, and other things like SmallTalk  and Wrd’s school days.

I think its incredible how just one man was able to create such a big and amazing tool that is now used in every area of knowledge, from general knowledge stuff to really specific and useful facts (that are sometimes weird).

I though this was going to be a boring WSQ but I actually found it very interesting.

This WSQ is about James Gosling, the father of Java Programming Language. You can find the interview I watched for the course here.

At early age he started to be interested in programming when his father showed him an old computer. Noticing that the focus in technology changes from hardware to software gave him the idea to develop Java. I find it fascinating how Java started as someting so simple and then revolutionized our modern world. Almost all modern computers depend on Java. Thanks to him we have all of the Java resources to our disposal and learn about them, James Gosling rocks!

Mr. Ward Cunningham, th creator of the Wiki, started with a little database made of cards using Hyper Card(It combines databse capabilities with a graphical, flexible, user-modifiable interface.) because his goal was the absortion of technology amongts technologist, and he made a database out of cards that tracked how ideas moved throught his company.

I find it really impressive how can just one person think of an idea to help himself and his company and it ends up being one of the most used tools amongts students and researchers or whoever uses it to find any kind of information, like, almost all kinds of concepts and information can be found there.

At some point of the interview the guy asked what should students learn or something like that and Ward replied that we should learn what a boolean variable is, jquery and javascript. I guess I'll be a little bit busy this summer.

Hey guys!

So we finally have an stable version of the Tanks Online game we did as a project!

Reminder: This game is not ours entirely, we got the game, then customized some stuff such as 3rd person camera, aim freely, visual filters, power ups, respawning, and most importantly a multiplayer capability we learned at the Unity Roadshow about 2 or 3 weeks ago.

Here’s a video showing some gameplay:

We had been testing the game on Ken’s class, it has been fun and it’s looking real different from the first version, Hermes freaking rocks!

While testing we detected some bugs and errors in general, Hermes then fixed it and also added some stuff. We also noticed how the game becomes less stable the more people enters a game, so let’s say it’s a good 1v1.
