They flipped it… like a pancake !

Well, its not like this thing of the “flipped learning” is that new for me, since the last semester we used it as well, the thing with the class  metodology this semester is that it was just like a MATRIX sequel, “Reloaded”.

I’m not against the freedom and the responsability that the flipped learning methodology grants students, its just that some people, myself for example, are not very good taking it all in, since we are not used to it.

What throws me off the most is the way we are graded this semester, since personally i’m not very confident in the way I work and in the results I produce, even if other people may say they are fine.

We’ll see how things go.

In this post I will share my ideas about the concept of abolishing grades for students.
My opinion about flipped learning you can find here on an old blog of mine.

These sources gave me information:
A Lecture From the Lectured
An A+ student regrets his grades
Should grading systems be abolished?
The Day I Abolished Grading

In general I find that this way to teach a good thing. What I don’t like is how the students in the first source argue. It sounds like they go to class with zero motivation and no discipline and blaim the teacher afterwards for not making it entertaining enough for them. It is good to give feedback to teachers, but it’s still your choice to get educated or not, which is why you should definitely learn to have some discipline if you want to go to school.

Anyways, if you want to realize an abolish grade system on a big scale, you should take two things into consideration:

  • Not only school would need to change, but also the whole industry. At the moment grades are being asked if you want to start working at a company directly after leaving from school, all over the world.
  • In some situations (e.g. in courses with 1200 people) it’s just not possible to abolish the grading system.

Things like this are obstacles on the way to get rid of the current grading system.

Nevertheless, I find it a good idea. In Finland the system is less evaluation-driven and PISA confirms a better education there. (But there are other important factors as well, that improve the quality of education in Finland. E.g. the average amount of students in one class is far smaller and teachers get different trained than in other countries.)

Flipped... Learning?

It comes from doing "Homework" at school and taking classes in our own house... Ok, what advantages does this have?

First of all a Flipped Learning teacher can follow every of his student progress individually, which is really nice.

Students can decide when or when not to study, which gives them time to do all the stuff they want to do, we could say that they have more oportunities to organize their own studying time or so.

I learned a lot about Flipped Learning from this video. It's very good explained there so it can make you compare the diferences between the Classic learning method and the Flipped Learning one.

IMO I think that Flipped learning is much better since it gives me the oportunitie to focus in other things and I can take the programming course in my "Free time" which is really helpful at least for me.

A flipped classroom... Literally.

Sometimes people only memorize things for passing the class with a good grade and also there are teachers who doesn’t integrate their students to the class. This leads to the problems of people not always learning in practice what they should, but also I think there should be a balanced.
In my mind, the perfect setting will be a balance between “Flipped classroom” and the typical method. Sometimes I felt lost and without any motivation to post blogs, and I think this is generated because there is no immediate feedback from the instructor and also I miss having work assignments which are thought in the class. And also because we have liberty but in reality it doesn’t exist, we need to follow a path to pass the class.

I am more a believer of having each one a different path with a shared end line.

We could be told to made a project and give the bases of programming in class. But that wouldn’t be sufficient so everyone would be searching for new things in the web. I am not an expert in education and I am not calling this system bad, I like it but my satisfaction is not fulfilled like when doing my other project.
Have some music for finishing this:

Hi guys!

Today I’m going to talk about #AbolishGrades

I saw this video and I really love it because compares the traditional way to teach and flipped learn way. In my opinion flipped learn is better for us as students because we can learn at our pace. We can choose the topics we want to learn and decide how much time we spend on it.

I think flippled learn should be implemented in all classes at the Tec.

Bye, Bye, Bye Grades…

Pardon for the featured image, just watched “Guardians of the Galaxy” and thought of it with the title of this WSQ :D

The abolish grades is something that i haven’t done before. I think it is a very neat concept. By abolishing grades i think we students will have a lot more freedom than that which we have had in other classes. Even though it is something very interesting it could have some serious drawbacks for people that are not actually interested in the course, (not my problem though). This concept will actually be very beneficiary for me because I’m the kind of person who forgets stuff and does everything at the last possible moments.

This new year my teacher Ken Bauer changed again his methods of evaluating, this year Ken is applying an #AbolishGrades system, so I wasn’t expecting something like this, so it took me by surprise, however I feel happy to be involved in something different.

Flipped Learning is about you learn by yourself, and the teacher is there to guide you, if you have any difficult, but this system allow the students to be their own teacher and love learnings.

If you had any doubt I recommend you to see this video, that explains a little bit more about Flipped Learning

WSQ04- Flipped Learning

The first semester that I took a class with ken and he said that we can do whatever we want in class I thought that he was crazy, but now I know for a fact that this method of teaching actually works.

During a semester with ken we learn not only programing, we also learn responsibility but without getting stress. If you are really busy you can just relax and focus on what you need and then easily just watch some videos and nothing happens.

I really enjoy flipped clases and I would recommend them to many teachers and students.

Well this isn't a new concept for me because i've already been to Ken's flipped classroom which was a not so good experience at the beggining but i got used to it and now i think it's a better way to learn because it encourages students to learn, to look for information by themselves and not to just listen to a teacher say random stuff for an hour and a half and start going crazy because you didn't even got time to write down all that random stuff. Instead of stressing out because of all that information you couldn't process in a normal class, in a flipped classroom you already know what to do, what are you supposed to do and work on it during the class or during whatever time and to do so you must investigate, read, etc before every class and you don't have someone behind you yelling at you what you must do, you just do it because you want to, because you want to learn.WSQ04 – Flipped Learning / #AbolishGrades
